I just print out the paper sheet. Then I have my son help cut the strips (he's so into using his special safety scissors), and both my kids can roll it together. Then, when my daughter uses the potty, we all get to throw Dora's confetti in the air. Hurray!

With my first son I went immediately to a candy-based rewards system when potty training. I figured that straight-up sugar bribery would get us to the finish line in no time. I was amazed to discover that visual rewards like sticker charts actually worked better for my kid, as they allowed him to see how far he'd come as a potty user. And all without the sugar crash!

So with son #2 I'm skipping the candy and using the Diego's Potty Training Progress Chart from the get-go!

A couple years ago, I was at a friend’s house on a play date with my boy (he was about 2-½ at the time), and saw the friend’s potty training chart in their bathroom, complete with gold stars, stickers, the works. 

  

I remember thinking, “Oh, those charts never work.  I want my kids to use the toilet because their bodies tell them it’s time.  Not because they’ll get some kind of reward for it.”  

Well, guess what.  My friend’s daughter -- the one with the chart -- has been going to the toilet by herself for the past two years, no problem. My son, on the other hand, still puts up a fight when we even hint that it "might be potty time."  

So, for my second child, I’m jumping right on that chart train. Every time my daughter uses the potty, she’ll get to put a cute sticker in one of the spaces on the chart.  

Hey, at least I’m not bribing her with lollipops. (Not that I haven’t considered it on occasion...)

Diego's Potty Training Trophy

I am not crafty.

I'm the type of person who gazes at Pinterest with an innate understanding that I will never successfully crochet whimsical headwear for my offspring or wield a hot glue gun without doing myself great personal harm.  On the other hand, I understand that visual prompts like charts and homemade rewards are a great potty training reinforcers.

So what's a Mom to do?
